Kataragama Sri Lanka

To the southeast of Sri Lanka lies Kataragama, a small sacred village considered the subject of hundreds of pilgrimages throughout the island, both those of Buddhist religion as well as Hindu or indigenous native Vedda. A strategic location for the ancient Rohana kingdom, Kataragama witnessed some of the main Buddhist constructions in Sri Lanka, being one of the fastest growing jungle villages in recent decades. In addition to its proximity to the famous Yala National Park, Kataragama stands out for a collection of amazing corners and places: Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara Temple, majestic under its white dome and condition as one of Sri Lanka's four sacred temples; the Sella Kataragama Temple, built next to the Menik River and famous for valli Cave, especially worshipped by the Hindu population; or the rocky temple of Sithulpawwa, with its Buddhist murals.
