Sri Lanka is famous for its number of gemstone reserves, especially rubies. A condition that the town of Ratnapura embodies as few as it is an ancient reduction of extraction also frequented by Portuguese and other European powers that once reached the heart of the Ceilandes tropics in search of its most coveted flashes. Today, Ratnapura (literally, Gem City), is also popular given its starting point status for a route to Adam's Peak Temple, one of Sri Lanka's most famous pilgrimage areas. If you prefer to stay in the village itself, a collage of attractions unfolds in this enclave famous for being one of the first Buddhist character on the island: the Maha Samam Devalaya, temple dedicated to the god Saman; Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral; or the Pothgul Viharaya cave temple built on top of a hill by King Walagamba, according to legend.
