Ashdod (Hebrew: אַשְׁדּוֹד) is a city in the Southern District of Israel. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics of Israel (CBS), at the end of 2016 the city had a population of 221,591 inhabitants.1 It corresponds to the ancient Ashdod, one of the five city-states of the Philistines, which was later controlled by Israelites, Byzantines, Crusaders and Arabs.2 It is currently an important seaport and fishing port of the country. Asdod is an important industrial center of the region. The port of Ashdod is the largest port in Israel where 60% of the goods in the country are imported.
