For many travellers, Bulgaria begins on the Black Sea. Nessebar brings history and old streets right to the water's edge, Sozopol retains the atmosphere of a traditional seaside town, while Albena, Golden Sands and Sunny Beach offer easy family holidays, resorts and days centred around the beach. Further south, the bays and beaches around Sinemorets reveal a quieter, more natural side of the coastline.

But Bulgaria is far more than a summer destination. In winter, Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo take the journey into the mountains, with skiing, snow and evenings spent in the atmosphere of alpine resorts. During the rest of the year, the Rila and Pirin mountains offer hiking trails, glacial lakes and landscapes that completely transform the familiar image of the country.
For culture and city breaks, Sofia combines history, urban life and easy access to the mountains, while Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, brings together Roman ruins, historic houses, galleries and creative neighbourhoods. Veliko Tarnovo changes the scenery once again, with Tsarevets Fortress and a city dramatically spread across the hills.
There is also another Bulgaria devoted to wellbeing: Velingrad, Sandanski, Hisarya and Devin, where mineral springs and spa hotels can turn a few days away into a genuine retreat.
Bulgaria can be the sea close to home, the first ski trip of winter, a spa weekend or a journey through mountains and historic towns. Its proximity makes it easy to choose; its diversity makes it worth rediscovering.
