Here, the ocean sets the rhythm.

The Maldives are not a single island, but an archipelago of atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, each with its own lagoons, reefs and islands. Malé and the North Malé and South Malé Atolls are many travellers’ first introduction to this world, but further away lie Ari, Baa, Raa, Lhaviyani and Dhaalu — places where geography changes the experience from one atoll to another. In Baa Atoll, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protects one of the archipelago’s richest marine ecosystems.

Here, the ocean sets the rhythm.

The real choice in the Maldives is how you want to experience the ocean. Some islands are surrounded by house reefs accessible directly from the shore, others open onto wide lagoons and sandbanks, while more remote atolls bring greater tranquillity and a deeper sense of seclusion. Ari Atoll is known for its underwater world, Baa for its biodiversity, while local islands can reveal Maldivian life beyond the classic image of a tropical paradise.

You come for white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons, snorkelling and diving, coral reefs and marine life, wellness, water sports or simply the tranquillity. But the Maldives are best experienced when you choose the island and atoll around the experience you want: ocean and reef, adventure and relaxation, slow sunrises and evenings beneath the stars — with very little between you and the sea.
