Montenegro naturally begins in the Bay of Kotor, where mountains plunge almost vertically towards the water and the historic towns of Kotor and Perast sit between stone, sea and Venetian fortifications. Beyond the bay, Budva changes the rhythm with beaches, terraces and lively evenings, while Sveti Stefan, dramatically set just off the coast, has become one of the Adriatic’s most recognisable images.

But Montenegro doesn’t end at the sea. Further south, Petrovac, Bar and Ulcinj lead towards wider beaches and a different atmosphere, while inland you’ll find Lake Skadar, canyons, monasteries and mountain roads. Further north, Durmitor, Žabljak and the spectacular Tara River Canyon reveal another country — alpine, green and far wilder than the coast might suggest.
You come for the Adriatic and its beaches, bays and sailing, historic towns, food, nature, hiking, rafting or a road trip. But Montenegro is at its best when you combine them: Kotor and Budva, sea and Durmitor, bays and canyons, days on the coast and roads through the mountains — in a country compact enough that you don’t have to choose between them.
