DESTINATIONS · Tanzania

Here, wild Africa and the Indian Ocean are part of the same journey.

For many travellers, Tanzania begins in the north, between Arusha, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, where the savannah stretches to the horizon and elephants, lions, giraffes and herds of antelope are part of the landscape. Tarangire adds ancient baobabs and remarkable concentrations of elephants, while Lake Manyara changes the scenery once again, between forest, water and the escarpment of the Rift Valley.

Here, wild Africa and the Indian Ocean are part of the same journey.

But Tanzania is much more than safari. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, opens the door to trekking and adventure, while further south parks such as Nyerere and Ruaha reveal a less travelled side of the country. Then comes Zanzibar — Stone Town, spice plantations, fishing villages and the beaches of Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Jambiani, where the savannah gives way to white sand and the Indian Ocean.

You come for safari and wildlife, the Great Migration, photography, trekking and Kilimanjaro, culture, beaches, diving and snorkelling. But one of Tanzania’s greatest experiences is the contrast: Serengeti and Ngorongoro, savannah and Zanzibar, safari mornings and days by the Indian Ocean — two very different worlds that can be part of the same journey.

“In Tanzania, I wouldn’t choose between safari and Zanzibar. It’s precisely the transition from savannah to the Indian Ocean that makes the journey so special.”
